The service town for south Monterey County, an hour from almost everything

King City had 13,332 residents at the 2020 census, and by the American Community Survey's 2024 five-year estimates the population was around 13,600 with a median household income of about $66,800 and roughly 43 percent of residents foreign-born.

It functions as the hub for the south end of the county, which is the fact that matters most for anything financial. When the nearest specialist, the nearest bank branch or the nearest insurance office is a long drive up the valley, people put off decisions that would take an hour to make. A good part of our job here is simply making it easy to have the conversation.

Mee Memorial, and healthcare employment

Mee Memorial Healthcare System on Canal Street is a rural healthcare system serving south Monterey County and one of the area's significant employers, supporting hundreds of jobs from clinical staff through to maintenance and surgery.

Healthcare employment brings its own retirement questions. Depending on the employer's structure, staff may have a 401(k), a 403(b), or both across different jobs, and nurses in particular often accumulate accounts at several employers over a career. The useful first step is an inventory of what exists, not a recommendation.

If you are carrying several old accounts, our rollover versus transfer page explains the difference that decides whether you owe tax when you consolidate them, and the 20 percent withholding rule that catches people who take a cheque instead of a direct transfer.

School district staff

King City Union School District serves around 2,500 students with roughly 240 full-time-equivalent staff, and the high school district serves the wider south county. District employees are generally CalSTRS members for certificated roles and CalPERS for classified roles, with a 403(b) available on top.

The 403(b) vendor list is set by the district, and the charges vary far more between vendors than most people realise. Our district 403(b) page explains how to get the list and what to compare on it.

Agricultural and vineyard households

South county agriculture runs on seasonal labour like the rest of the valley, and the same rule applies: the premium has to be payable in the slow months, or the policy will not be there when it is needed. We set the number against the household's worst month rather than its best.

For many families here the first priority is final expense cover rather than income replacement, and we explain the waiting period and the level-premium arithmetic before anyone signs, because those are the two features most likely to surprise a family later.

Distance is the real obstacle

  • We make the drive. South county is a long way from Salinas and we treat that as our problem, not yours.
  • Video works well for the first conversation. Reading a plan statement together over a screen share is often clearer than doing it across a table.
  • Nothing needs to be decided in one meeting. We put the options in writing so you can think about them without anyone sitting opposite you.
  • 24 hours' written notice before any in-home appointment with anyone 65 or older, as California law requires.

What we will not do

We will not recommend an income product to a household that already has a pension covering its essential expenses, because there is no gap for it to fill. We will not suggest cashing out a retirement account without showing you the tax first. And we will not tell you a policy is affordable without asking what your income looks like in your slowest month.

Questions people in King City ask

Yes. South county is a long drive and we treat that as our problem. Many first conversations happen by video because it is faster, but if you want us in the room we will be there by appointment.

Probably in three separate accounts, possibly a mix of 401(k) and 403(b). Start with an inventory. Consolidating can simplify things, but do it as a direct transfer so nothing is withheld and no deadline applies.

If an employer plan pays retirement money to you rather than to the receiving institution, it must withhold 20 percent for federal tax. To complete the rollover you then have to deposit the full pre-withholding amount within 60 days, making up that 20 percent from elsewhere. A direct transfer avoids the whole problem.

That depends on the vendor list your district allows and what each vendor charges, which varies a great deal. Get the list first. We will go through the charges with you at no cost, including for vendors we cannot sell.

Work backwards from the premium you could pay in your slowest month, then see what coverage that buys. It is the reverse of how most quotes are presented, and it is the order that keeps policies in force.

No. Reviewing documents, running the numbers and explaining options costs nothing. If you buy a policy through us the insurance company pays us, and your premium is the same either way.
